The ultimate makeover: face transplants. When Isabelle Dinoire underwent the world’s first face transplant in November 2005, a surgical Rubicon was crossed. Until then, surgeons had been unsure whether the human immune system would reject a new face (skin provokes one of the strongest immune responses), and whether the human psyche was capable of accepting it.
